We help patients apply for Centennial Care 2.0, New Mexico’s Medicaid program. We can also help patients get affordable coverage through the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange (HIX) or New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool. Call us at 505.272.2521 to apply.

  • Centennial Care
    • (Medicaid) provides free healthcare for New Mexicans who qualify
  • Health Exchange (HIX)
    • (also called BeWellNM) has health insurance plans available for New Mexicans who don't qualify for Centennial Care to purchase and offers financial assistance to help with monthly costs
  • New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP)
    • provides health insurance coverage to New Mexicans who are denied other forms of health insurance

If you have a permanent Bernalillo or Sandoval County address and you meet certain income guidelines, you may qualify for medical assistance through UNM Care and Out of County Care. This program can help cover expenses for people who do not have insurance.  It can also help people with Medicare and/or private insurance coverage who have bills to pay at UNM Hospital and UNM Medical Group. If you are approved, we can go back 6 months and use the approved UNM Care and Out of County Care funds to help pay those bills.

UNM Care and Out of County Care is available to those who meet the program requirements. Immigration status does not matter and proof of status is not required.

Find out if you qualify. Call 505-272-2521 to make an appointment with a patient financial services representative. Our Financial Assistance team will fill out the application with you and ask you to bring documents to support your application.

New Mexicans can access quality care at UNM Health centers or through our community partners, including:

Patients who do not qualify for insurance or financial assistance will qualify for our automatic self-pay discount. This reduces hospital and physician charges by 45% for residents of New Mexico excluding paid-up front services as defined by your clinic.

When you get care at UNM Health, you’ll get two bills: one from UNM Hospitals and one from UNM Medical Group, Inc. for physicians’ charges.

To make payment arrangements for the hospital bill, call 505-272-2521.
To make payment arrangements for UNM Medical Group bill, call the number on your bill.

If you get care at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, expect to receive a third bill with a number you can call to make payment arrangements.

Patient Financial Services can help you set up affordable payment plans to cover out-of-pocket health care expenses over time, instead of all at once. Call to create a payment plan:

Emergency Medical Services for Non-Citizens (EMSNC) (formerly EMSA) is for immigrants who cannot get Medicaid due to their immigration status. EMSNC pays for emergency medical services, including labor and delivery.

You must apply within three months after getting services. You can apply with the assistance of the hospital staff who will contact the Income Support Division (ISD). Ask about EMSNC before you leave the hospital and, if possible, fill out an application there. You do not need to provide a social security number, birth certificate, or proof of immigration status. Please call us at 505.272.2521 to make an appointment if you want more information.

When completing an EMSNC application at UNM Hospital, submit the completed application to your representative. We will notify you when we submit the paperwork ISD. Or, if we determine that services you received do not qualify as emergency medical services, we will notify you that we will not submit approval to ISD.
